Python string ljust

Python String : ljust()

This article demonstrates how to use of ljust() method in string.

The string ljust() method returns a left-justified string of a given minimum width.

Syntax :

string.ljust(width,fillchar)

Parameter Values :

ParameterDescription
widthwidth of the given string. If width is less than or equal to the length of the string, original string is returned.
fillcare  (Optional)  character to fill the remaining space of the width

Returns :

The ljust() method returns the left-justified string within the given minimum width.

If fillchar is defined, it also fills the remaining space with the defined character.

Sample Code :

1.
# example string
string = 'cppsecrets'
width = 12

# print left justified string
print(string.ljust(width))

Output :
cppsecrets

Here, the minimum width defined is 12. So, the resultant string is of minimum length 12.And, the string 'cppsecrets' is aligned to the left which makes leaves two spaces on the right of the word.

2.
# example string
string = 'cppsecrets'
width = 12
fillchar = '*'

# print left justified string
print(string.ljust(width, fillchar))
Output :
cppsecrets**
Here, the string 'cppsecrets' is aligned to the left and the remaining two spaces on the right is filled with the character '*'.

Hence,we can see above function ljust() returns a space-padded string with the original string left-justified to a total of width columns.
