Python String : endswith()


This article demonstrates how to use of endswith() method in string.

The endswith() method returns True if a string ends with the specified suffix. If not, it returns False.


Syntax :

string.endswith(suffix,start,end)


Parameter Values :

ParameterDescription
suffixString or tuple of suffixes to be checked
startoptional. Beginning position where suffix is to be checked within the string
endOptional. Ending position where suffix is to be checked within the string


Returns :

The endswith() method returns a boolean.

  • It returns True if strings ends with the specified suffix.
  • It returns False if string doesn't end with the specified suffix.



Sample Code :

endswith() without start and end Parameters :

text = "I am working in cppsecrets."

result = text.endswith('cppsecrets')
# returns False
print(result)

result = text.endswith('cppsecrets.')
# returns True
print(result)

result = text.endswith('I am working in cppsecrets.')
# returns True
print(result)
Output :
False
True
True

endswith() with start and end Parameters :

string = "I am python developer."

# start parameter: 4
# " python developer." string is searched
result = string.endswith('er.'4)
print(result)



result = string.endswith('er'415)
# Returns False
print(result)

result = string.endswith('v'415)
# returns True
print(result)
Output :
True
False
True


Hence,we can see above function endswith() determines if string or a substring of string (if starting index and ending index are given) ends with suffix; returns true if so and false otherwise.
